Some days we like to just sit and watch the birds have their breakfast.

A female hummingbird floats like magic while she drinks a little sugar water. The males have bright red throats.
Not a bad shot on a second’s notice and with no tripod! She’s an amazing little bird, so graceful and acrobatic.
Uncle Timm,
How come the girl birds don’t have a read throat? Do humming birds actually humm or is it just what they are called?
Love Ryan!
Very good questions, Ryan!
With people, the females are typically the most beautiful. But with birds, it’s usually the males that have the most striking and beautiful features. This is so they can attract the lady birds.
And yes, hummingbirds hum! If you are close enough, you can hear the sound of the hummingbird’s wings flapping up to 100 times per second. It almost sounds like a Star Wars light saber. You can really hear it if the hummingbird buzzes by your head, which they like to do if I try to bring their feeder inside too early in the evening.
The male hummingbirds also make a loud clicking sound to attract the female birds. They fly back and forth in a giant U shape clicking and humming and doing a little dance to get attention.
