Hike to Adair WMA

We went on a fun hike to the Adair Wildlife Management Area.  It is a 635-acre preserve in Boone County, Kentucky, with wooded and open rolling land.

Theresa starts down Gum Branch Trail

And it starts with a hike right out our back door down our Gum Branch Trail.  What a treat to be able enjoy such a beautiful hike without even getting in a car!

Shadow and Darby out ahead on the grassy road

Once we cross the creek and leave our property, there’s 400+ acres of private land co-owned by our friend Barbara.  That’s a lot of land to keep track of, so she asked us to help keep an eye on things.  One nice part about living in the country is people look out for each other.

Gas-line clearing into Big Bone valley

Along the way we cross a gas-line clearing, which opens up into the Big Bone valley.  The ridge in the background is in Big Bone Lick State Park.

Nothing but green fields and blue sky

At the top of the hill is a beautiful, broad meadow with a 360-degree view of nothing but grass and trees.

Field of Queen Anne's Lace

We found the largest field of Queen Anne’s Lace we’ve ever seen.  Acres and acres of pretty white flowers.

Shadow scouting the open meadow

Our dog Shadow is scouting out ahead in the open meadow.

Goldenrod

There are many large fields of goldenrod, which is about a week away from blooming.  We’ll definitely have to return for another hike next week, when this entire field will be bright yellow.

Welcome to the Adair Wildlife Management Area

At last we reach the Adair WMA.  We hike on for a little bit, then turn back and retrace our steps home.  We’ll post photos of our hike in Adair WMA later.

Back home to the creek behind our house.  Darby and Shadow are taking a cool dip after a long, warm hike.  What a great way to spend a holiday weekend!

  1. Thanks for the beautiful pictures of our property, and for your help keeping an eye on it.

  2. Timm,

I found this blog while looking for information about the Adair WMA online. These are great photos; thanks for posting them.

My family and I are not-so-distant neighbors. We live just outside of Union on Hathaway road. (Two story frame farmhouse on the north side of the road, west of Union) Right now, I’ve got an 8′ star of LED lights on top of our carriage house, so it’s hard to miss.

Anyway, now you have some clue about me, now that I’ve read your blog.
