More Jabba the Toad

Much to our delight, Jabba the Toad has returned to live another summer on our porch!

Here is Jabba in her very own toad bath.  Well, it’s not hers exclusively … the dogs also use it as a water bowl, sometimes taking a drink while Jabba is swimming!  But neither seem to mind each other, and Jabba seems to enjoy the protection the dogs give her from predators.

Darby Dog alerted me to this snake living under our porch.

This looks like a hybrid between a Black Racer and a Copperhead, but I think it may be a rat snake.

Return of the Jabba

Jabba the Toad has returned to our porch.  We weren’t sure if we had accidentally squished him with our car last year.  But when he returned this spring, he went right for his toad bath and cushy house we made for him, so it must be the original Jabba.  And he’s still as chubby as ever!

Spring Flies

Every spring, hundreds of houseflies gather on our porch railing to bask in the sun and socialize.  At first I thought they were mating, but a close inspection showed there was no hanky-panky going on.  So maybe this deck rail is their meeting place, where the flies flirt to find a mate, and then they fly off to make babies flies elsewhere.  I enjoy running my hand along the rail and watching the flies take off, swarm, and land back down on the rail.

Ice Cliffs

We hiked up to the cliffs below Little Wolf Peak in early March.  Though it was nearly 60 degrees outside, there were still a couple inches of snow on the ground and massive ice formations on the cliffs.

We encountered some of the largest icicles we’ve ever seen.  Many were over 10 feet long and too thick to wrap your hand around, and a couple icicles grew to as much as 20 feet long.

Easter Egg Scramble

It’s time for the annual Spring Egg Hunt at Tower Park in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky!

This is the first year we’ve attended.  Though there were thousands of colored eggs on the ground, residents informed us that the recession caused a huge cutback in the number of eggs this year.

It was cloudy all day, but moments before sunset, the cloud bank lifted just high enough to reveal the fiery sunset through the trees.
