Timm on his 45th Birthday in Texas

Here I am on my 45th birthday in Dog Canyon.  I like to sit on the edge of a cliff or mountain every year on my birthday.  It reminds me that we are all just one slip away from the end of our days on this beautiful planet.

If you are interested, check out our photo tour to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas.

Reddish-Brown Stag Beetle

This reddish-brown stag beetle was hanging out on our porch in the glow of our living room lamp.  Adult stag beetles emerge in June & July, eat little, and fly all night.  They are attracted to artificial light.  During the day they hide in rotting logs and moist soil.  They are a tough-looking bug.

Carlsbad Caverns

Carlsbad Caverns isn’t the longest cave in the world, or the largest, or the deepest.  But it’s arguably one of the most spectacular caves ever discovered.

Check out the photo tour from our trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico in October 2009.

We had a close encounter with a copperhead at Little Wolf Nature Preserve.

Copperhead snake in the grass

Fortunately Theresa spotted him, and he was coiled up tight, saying "I’m cold from the rain, so don’t mess with me, and I won’t mess with you."

There seems to be an explosion of baby praying mantis… mantises, mantii, what’s the plural?

These little guys are everywhere on the lawn furniture, the deck, crawling on my shirt, etc.

Glenda the Good Snake

Here is another photo of Glenda the Good Snake. She seems to realize that we and the dogs will not harm her, so she’s been spending a lot more time out in the open lately.
