Here I am on my 45th birthday in Dog Canyon. I like to sit on the edge of a cliff or mountain every year on my birthday. It reminds me that we are all just one slip away from the end of our days on this beautiful planet.

This reddish-brown stag beetle was hanging out on our porch in the glow of our living room lamp. Adult stag beetles emerge in June & July, eat little, and fly all night. They are attracted to artificial light. During the day they hide in rotting logs and moist soil. They are a tough-looking bug.
Here is the official hospital photo of my nephew Alexander James, son of Stephen and Catherine Hoctor. He was born at 6:10 a.m. on Saturday, June 11th, 2011. He weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces and was 21” in length. Congratulations to Stephen and Catherine!

Carlsbad Caverns isn’t the longest cave in the world, or the largest, or the deepest. But it’s arguably one of the most spectacular caves ever discovered.

These little guys are everywhere on the lawn furniture, the deck, crawling on my shirt, etc.
