One strike, and you’re out.  Just kidding.  Actually this is Glenda the good snake, a rat snake, which eats mice and other rodents.  She patrols the perimeter of our house and loves to tease Darby.

Glenda the Good Snake

Glenda is unlikely to strike unless provoked.  A bite would hurt somewhat, but not as painful as a black racer.  And thankfully not poisonous like a Copperhead, which is prevalent in Southern Kentucky, but not as much here in Northern Kentucky.

Life in the Country

Ahh, life in the country.  We walked out the door and saw this 5-footer slinking across the driveway.

Snake

We believe he is a black rat snake, one of Kentucky’s largest snakes that can grow up to 6 feet long.  Rat snakes are good climbers, and this one loves to climb up under the vinyl siding in our house.  This is a good snake to have around, as it feeds on mice and rats, which it kills by constriction.

Theresa is visiting Bangalore, India for a business trip.  Here are some of the first photos she took from her sight-seeing trip on Saturday.

Mysore Palace

This is the Mysore Palace.  According to WikiTravel, the Mysore Palace has “intricately carved rosewood doors and ceilings some with inlaid ivory work, marble figurines, collections of caskets, paintings of the members of the royal family and other objects of personal use exhibit such opulence.”

Timm & Jody

Here’s a photo of me at about age 3 with my dog Jody, a beagle mix.  I was very sick as a child, and when I’d run a fever, Jody would lay in bed with me.  Occasionally my mom would find Jody laying across my already-hot forehead!  But I’m not sure why my hands are so swollen in this photo.

Gum Branch is a little high today, making the crossing an adventure.

Darby

Darby is contemplating how she’s going to cross the stream without dipping her paws in the icy water.  Answer: she can’t, she’s gonna get wet!

We were excited to walk on the new Adair Nature Preserve (temporary name).  Barbara and her family have placed a conservation easement on over 200 acres of their property, which is adjacent to ours.

Barbara

We commend Barbara for preserving this beautiful Kentucky land for future generations of wildlife and people to enjoy!!  The world is a better place because of people like Barbara.

We hiked with our friend Barbara down to Gum Branch, a stream behind our house on Barbara’s land.

Shadow, Barbara and Theresa

Shadow, Barbara and Theresa get ready to venture out on this beautiful but cold winter day.  The temps were in the low 20s but the sun felt warm on our skin.

Hiking in the Snow with the Dogs
posted by: Timm in Dogs, Snow on Jan 13th, 2011 | 1 Comment »

This is the snowiest winter I can remember in Northern Kentucky.  Although we haven’t had any massive snow storms this year, we’ve had a series of smaller snows ranging from 2-6” since early December that have kept us blanketed almost the entire time, a rare event in this part of the country.

Shadow and Darby

Shadow and Darby are ready to go hiking in the snow.
